Breaking Dawn Party Highlights

Friday August 1, me and some Newport Way teens celebrated the release of the final book in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn. Much fun was had, and a good Edward vs. Jacob debate ensued (Edward was the clear winner). We had a raffle, trivia, "blood punch", red velvet cupcakes, and bookmark making! One brave young man even showed up! Here are some pictures from the event.

Video Book Review Contest

This year’s summer reading program has a new feature – Videos! We want you to create book trailers or be the critic and review the latest books you’ve read.

If you have access to a video camera, get creative and make a short video that either acts as a “trailer” for the book, or be the critic and tell us why you loved or hated the book. Be as creative as you can because there will be a prize for the best video.

Don’t have a video camera? Participating libraries will host events where you can use library equipment to make and submit your videos. Newport Way's VBR shoot events will be:

July 2: 2:30-4:30

July 29: 2:30-4:30

Please come prepared with your script and props! We'll help you edit the movies, and submit them to the contest. For more information contact Jennifer Wooten at jwooten@kcls.org or Carrie Bowman at clbowman@kcls.org.

Contest Rules:

  • Choose your format. Book “trailer” which is like a movie trailer. Or, be the critic and review books.
  • Create cool videos that are no longer than 3 minutes.
  • Upload your videos to your own Youtube account with the tag VBRkcls2008.
  • Fill out the KCLS submission form (coming soon) and use the URL from your Youtube account.

Author Visit: Alice Hoffman

I was lucky enough to see the acclaimed author Alice Hoffman today at the Bellevue Regional Library. She talked about her latest book The Third Angel, and her inspiration for it. She does such an amazing job of creating very real characters without over-explaining their personalities.

Two of Alice Hoffman's books have been turned into movies,

Practical Magic , and

She has also written several books for teens. One that I want to read is titled Incantation about a Jewish girl who has to live as a Catholic during the Spanish Inquisition. Many, if not all, of Alice Hoffman's books involve a little bit of magic...some people refer to her style as magic realsim.
Here are some other Teen titles by Alice Hoffman:
